David Mickus

Brass Tech

David Mickus is a North Carolina native who picked up the horn one day in fifth grade band. A few decades later, he remains on the lookout for opportunities to help others experience the sound of his favorite instrument, both where it is expected and where it may be surprising.

David is a founding member of Stumptown Brass, a musical collective aimed toward exhibiting the diversity and flexibility of brass instruments through crossing genre lines and collaborating with other musicians and creatives. As a freelance horn player, David has performed with the Charlotte Master Chorale, Carolina Voices, the Union Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte New Music’s Your Neighborhood Orchestra, and many other ensembles throughout the Carolinas. An excited advocate for new music, David has commissioned and been a part of composition consortia for several new works for horn and brass chamber ensembles, with a particular interest in pieces involving electronics or game theory.

A perennial marching arts enthusiast, David was a marching member of Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps during the 2003 and 2004 seasons during his undergraduate studies in music education. In the scholastic world, he held staff positions and consulted middle and high school concert and marching bands in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, and Lincoln Counties for over a decade.

During the week, David is a paralegal whose work focuses on estate planning and helping clients think about their futures. After work and away from the horn, David enjoys strength sports, tabletop RPGs, and just about everything else nerdy and is particularly grateful that his wife (hopefully along with their pets) shares much of that nerdy weirdness.
